Program Descriptions

All Sharks' programs emphasize proper stroke mechanics, goal setting, team cooperation, and enjoyment of the sport. Dryland training is included with the Junior II through Senior I programs.

Learn-to-Swim

Designed for younger swimmers at least four years old. This program is offered one hour per week in six-week sessions. Coaches spend each session in the water with the swimmers in a small group format. The Learn-to-Swim program meets Sunday nights at the Woodlands pool from 6-7 pm or 7-8 pm for a six-week session.

Rising Stars

Designed for young swimmers with little or no competitive experience. The program emphasizes teaching the four competitive strokes in a fun environment.

Tryout Criteria: Demonstrate the ability to complete multiple laps of the pool, one lap at a time, without stopping, in at least freestyle and backstroke

(Three practices per week)

Junior III

Designed for primarily younger swimmers with some competitive experience who need significant instruction on stroke technique, starts, and turns. The program emphasizes stroke, start, and turn instruction in a fun atmosphere.

Tryout Criteria:

  • Demonstrate the ability to complete multiple laps of the pool consecutively without stopping

  • Demonstrate knowledge of all four competitive strokes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of proper starts and turns

(Four practices per week)

Junior II

Designed for age-group swimmers with competitive experience who still need instruction on stroke technique, but who are ready to complete some endurance training. The program emphasizes stroke, start, and turn instruction with an introduction to endurance training using the pace clock, and additional emphasis on goal setting.

Tryout Criteria:

  • Demonstrate the ability to swim all four competitive strokes legally

  • Demonstrate the ability to execute a proper dive from the starting block

  • Demonstrate the ability to perform proper turns for all four strokes

  • Demonstrate the ability to complete longer swims (200 yards +) swimming at least at a basic endurance level

(Four practices per wk with some dry land training)

Junior I

Designed for more advanced age-group swimmers with significant competitive experience who have the desire to prepare for senior level training. The program has a greater emphasis on increasing endurance and interval training while incorporating proper stroke mechanics. Goal setting, mental preparation, race strategy, and dry land training become greater priorities with the Junior I group. Swimmers must have the desire to reach higher-level competition, such as Junior Olympics and Senior Champs.

Tryout Criteria:

  • Demonstrate the skills mentioned in the first four items listed above for the Junior II group

  • Demonstrate the ability to complete longer distance swims in all four strokes at a moderate to fast pace

  • Show the willingness to make a commitment to practice and meet attendance and a higher level of training

  • Show a desire to reach higher levels of the sport (e.g., Age Group Champs, Zones, preparation for Senior Level training)

(Five practices per week with an increase in dry land training)

Senior II

Designed for swimmers beyond the Junior level, but not yet ready for the full senior level training regimen. Also designed for senior swimmers with less experience or those who are not able to make the commitment that is required at the Senior I level. The program emphasizes endurance and interval training while maintaining proper stroke mechanics, goal setting, mental preparation, race strategy, and dryland training.

Tryout Criteria:

  • Significant prior competitive swimming experience

  • Demonstrate the ability to train and perform at an advanced level

  • Make a commitment to practice and meet attendance

  • Show the desire to go through the goal-setting process and show dedication to working towards those goals

  • Individual meeting with the Head Coach

(Two schedule options - please see 2006-2007 Practice Schedule for times)

Senior I

This program is designed for serious, committed swimmers who wish to train for the highest levels of competition. The program emphasizes endurance training and race strategies, mental preparation, and a varied dryland routine. Swimmers are expected to attend all practices and have a strong desire to excel at the highest levels of the sport.

Coach recommendation is required for the Senior I group.
